Vegan MoFo Day 21 - Happy Birthday 'Dizzy' Gillespie

Welcome to Vegan MoFo Twenty-One
- Day 21 of Vegan Month of Food 2011

Happy Birthday to the father of modern Jazz
John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie

A major figure in the development of bebop and modern jazz,
and perhaps the greatest jazz trumpeter of all time,
this bandleader, singer and composer, worked with such musical greats as
Cab Calloway, Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald,
Earl 'Fatha' Hines, Benny Carter, Sonny Rollins and Stan Getz.
Mr. Gillespie taught and influenced many other musicians including
Miles Davis, Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown, Arturo Sandoval,
Lee Morgan, John Faddis and Chuck Mangione.

For the countless hours of musical enjoyment,

Thank you, Dizzy Gillespie!

(FYI - In 1953, someone fell on Mr. Gillespie's trumpet. To him, it sounded better with the horn bent upwards, so he left it tat way as an enduring, unintentional trademark.)

Culling thru my freezer to free up space,
persimmons frozen from last season reminded me that I could use some 'orange' in my food rainbow.
Led me to Colleen Patrick-Goudreau's
Color Me Vegan.

Babycakes Cupcake Maker,

not wanting sister Pie maker to have all the fun, presents
Persimmon Tea Cakes
Mashing the pureed persimmons
Flour and spice mixture
Adding chopped pecans to the mix
Batter in the Babycakes
Mini Persimmon Tea Cakes.
Recipe makes about 40 mini-cakes, or one 12 serving cake.

Happy Birthday, Jazz Man!

(tune in Stevie Wonder singing
Happy Birthday!)
